FEE-HELP
This program is supported by the FEE-HELP Loan Scheme. FEE-HELP is part of the Australian Government’s Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) and assists eligible full fee-paying students to pay for all or part of their tuition costs for certain programs with TAFE NSW. To check if you are eligible and for other information visit the TAFE NSW FEE-HELP website at: www.tafensw.edu.au/degrees/fees.
How does FEE-HELP work?
FEE-HELP is a study loan paid by the government to your education provider for eligible courses. For post-graduate courses you accumulate liability for the loan as you study, rather than up-front. For example, part-time students on both the Graduate Diploma of Leadership (VET Sector) and the Graduate Certificate in Leadership study two subjects at a time, at a cost of $1,500 = $3,000 per semester. If you opt to take out the FEE-HELP loan you incur the liability for the loan at $3,000 per semester.
Depending on your income, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will deduct a % of the outstanding loan amount from your salary. The % increases as you earn more, but as an example, in the 2013-2014 tax year a student earning less than $53,345 will repay nothing, but a student on the Graduate Diploma of Leadership (VET Sector) earning between $53,345 and $59,421 will repay the loan at 4% per year.
If that student has only just started studying, they will repay 4% of $3,000 in that tax year, but if they are in their second year and have incurred the liability for the full course cost they will repay 4% of $12,000 that year, i.e. $480.
You can also choose to make voluntary repayments into the loan at any time.
Exact calculations depend on your individual tax situation: TAFE staff cannot make accurate predictions of repayment amounts and the figures quoted above are purely indicative and may differ from your personal situation.
More information about FEE-HELP can be found on the StudyAssist website at studyassist.gov.au.
Applying for FEE-HELP
Once you have applied for the course and been accepted you will complete an on-line registration which will enable you to apply for FEE-HELP by providing your Tax File Number.
What happens if I withdraw from the course?
Each semester there is a Census Date. Students who withdraw from the course before the Census Date for that semester do not incur a FEE-HELP loan for that semester. If you withdraw after the Census Date you will incur the FEE-HELP loan for that semester whether or not you choose to continue studying those subjects. Please talk to your tutors and the Course Coordinator early if you are experiencing any difficulties or are thinking about withdrawing.
